I like the style of Jazzy Vegetarian, which has a simple, laid-back flow. The author, Laura Theodore, incorporates her whimsical approach as a jazz singer to create an inviting cookbook that is unintimidating to say the least. Though I love the simplicity of her recipes as someone who has been cooking and baking dairy-free for a while, I think this is a fabulous cookbook for beginners and newbies to vegan cuisine. Laura includes a full range of recipes (breakfast, appetizers, entrees, desserts, etc.), and for the most part they use everyday foods and have relatively short ingredient lists.

...Quick and easy recipes, now that is music to my ears. In her new cookbook, Jazzy Vegetarian, Laura Theodore takes a step back from the elaborate and sometimes quite strange dishes that vegan chefs are striving to create. Her focus is simple, flavorful cuisine that you can enjoy every day.

Though Laura offers the typical array of recipes in her cookbook, I found myself drawn most to the pastas. The ingredients that she uses in her pastas are ones that I almost always have on hand, and she doesn’t shy away from flavor, using gentle spices, fresh herbs, you name it. You can see my version of her Sun-Dried Tomato and Broccoli Penne (which we loved) in the Pasta Recipes Section here on Go Dairy Free.

Here is a sampling of some of the other recipes that I found inviting:

                        Ginger & Maple Iced Tea

                        Chocolate Ganache Pudding

Mashed Carrots and Potatoes with Rosemary

                        Caramelized Balsamic Artichokes

                        Perfect Party Portobellos

                        Quick Lasagna Rolls

                        Arugula & Walnut Pesto Pasta

                        Nori Lunch Rolls

                        Savory Sweet Potato Soup

                        Bountiful Breakfast Bread

                        Luscious Little Carrot Muffins

                        Breakfast Rice with Sweet Spices

Other notes:

* This is a hardback cookbook with pictures for most of the recipes, but what I liked best were the "how to" photos, demonstrating techniques.

* This is a cookbook first and foremost. There is a brief introduction that includes ingredient information and some basics on a plant-based diet, followed by a good selection of menu suggestions using the recipes, but then she jumps right into the recipes.

* Even though the title states "Vegetarian" this is an all-vegan and dairy-free cookbook that I think of as a good resource for anyone seeking simple dairy-free and lactose-free recipes.

Helping you achieve your New Year’s resolution to eat healthier:

COOKBOOK REVIEW: By Betsy Hays, January 2012

Before the holiday food excesses are conveniently forgotten, before the year gallops away from us and before everyone’s eyes glaze over at that all-to-familiar goal of eating “healthier”, let me entice you with another, more appetizing motivation for incorporating healthy plant-based food into your cuisine. It’s delicious (and this book makes it easy)!

As a radio and public television host, Bloomingdale resident and award-winning jazz singer and songwriter Laura Theodore has been teaching, writing and lecturing on the benefits and joys of a plant-centered diet for over 15 years. Now, in her new book, Jazzy Vegetarian, Lively Vegan Cuisine That’s Easy and Delicious (2011, Book Publishing Company), Theodore shares her knowledge and enthusiasm for vegan cooking in a format that impossible to resist. From the moving forward chronicling her journey from jazz singer to advocate for vegan food, to the helpful glossary of basic vegan ingredients, to the creative and mouth-watering recipes and photographs, Theodore presents simple, wholesome, attractive dishes that any host would be pleased to serve the most discerning diner.

I don’t know about you, but for me, just the word “vegan” makes me think “deprivation”, and, full disclosure, I’m not ready to give up my eggs and dairy products just yet. But Theodore’s down-to-earth vegan recipes for hearty dishes and desserts—everything from lasagna rolls to upside-down apple cake—are inspiring me to broaden my culinary horizons. After listening to her radio shows and watching the NJ Network "Jazzy Vegetarian" public television show, I’ve concluded that Laura Theodore may just be the vegan Rachel Ray, with her infectious enthusiasm and skilled but accessible recipes that anyone can make and enjoy. For more information on vegan eating and cooking, visit www.jazzyvegetarian.com. The book is available through Amazon.com and other outlets.

By Holly Nichole, December 2011

I received the Jazzy Vegetarian cookbook and immediately flipped through the pages looking for a recipe to try. All of the recipes looked so good it was hard to choose, but I went for the Jazzy Black Bean Chili because I absolutely love a good, wholesome, hearty, filling meal! All of the ingredients in this recipe are things that are easily accessible at your regular grocery store and things that everyone has heard of. No crazy ingredients that one would have to find at a health food store or Google what it actually is. So, that right there was awesome! Making the meal was super easy and very straightforward. After tasting my first bite, I was sold! This is one of the best tasting chili’s I have ever had! It is so hearty, filling and full of vegetables. My husband actually went back for, not seconds, but thirds! It has so much flavor and only uses 1/8th teaspoon of salt! Over all I would say I picked a winner and I’m super thankful to have this cookbook because I will definitely be working this into my weekly or biweekly meal planning!

With the HUGE sweet tooth that I have, I also decided to go ahead and make a dessert as well. I am a chocoholic so naturally I picked the Pots de Crème recipe, which is basically a chocolate mousse. This is a super easy recipe to make with only 4 ingredients but you do have to make it ahead of time because it has to refrigerate for 4-24 hours. I will say that after having this dessert it is absolutely amazing! It is so smooth and light and tastes so delicious! It would be an awesome recipe to double, triple, or even quadruple, if you were having a dinner party and you wanted to make something fancy without taking too much time or effort. It is fast to throw together and pop in the fridge while you move along to something else. This would even be something you could serve in wine or martini glasses to get that extra fancy look when serving!

Flipping through the rest of the recipes, all of them have ingredients that almost everyone has heard of and used before and the recipes are written very well. The author, Laura Theodore, even has menu plans towards the front of the book so you can put together full course meals that complement each other. She also has ingredient information and tips as well. Overall, this is a great cookbook for a vegan or vegetarian to incorporate into their meal planning as the recipes are easy and delicious! Makes you just wanna grab a glass of vino and play some jazz music while your cooking and enjoying a delicious meal!

Laura Theodore is The Jazzy Vegetarian and she will help you jazz up your plant-based {vegan} dinner!

JAZZ UP YOUR DINNER WITH THE JAZZY VEGETARIAN!

Want to add more vegetables to your diet? The Jazzy Vegetarian cookbook will make it easy! Laura Theodore is a jazz singer turned vegan cook and cooking show host. She truly loves a plant-based diet, and it shows throughout the book. It starts with tons of helpful hints – ingredients glossary, seasoning tips, growing and storing fresh herbs, and even a table of equivalent measures. She also gives menu planning tips and even has several menu plans, complete with a jazzy music pick!
I loved the recipes in this book. They’re simple, but really bring fresh thought to many dishes. They use ingredients most people can find in their grocery store. Although the name of the book is The Jazzy Vegetarian, all of the recipes are vegan. If you’ve always wanted to try artichokes but have never been brave enough too, this book will definitely arm you with the knowledge you need. Laura gives step by step instructions along with pictures on how to prepare artichokes. I’m definitely trying them when they’re in season again! She also gives you several ways to prepare them.
There are a lot of great photos throughout the book. She reminded me of ingredients I love, that haven’t used lately, like wheat germ. Laura also uses regular ingredients like arugula in new ways that you probably haven’t tried before.
The Quick Penne with Broccoli and Sun-Dried Tomatoes was the perfect meal for a busy weekday. Little Miss was able to help me prepare it, which is always good. The servings are extremely generous – the recipes I tried made a lot more servings for me than what the recipe said.
The Barbecue Tempeh Cutlets was another really easy recipe I tried. It makes a great sandwich! Additionally, most of the time for this recipe is spent cooking it in the oven, so once you get it in the pan you can really just forget about it.

You can buy The Jazzy Vegetarian from Book Publishing Company.  I received a copy for review purposes.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Jazzy Vegetarian vegan cookbook

While my family and I aren’t vegetarians, we do eat a number of vegetarian meals throughout the week to keep our food budget under control.  Many vegetarian meals also encourage healthy eating habits.  They tend to be high in whole grains, vegetables and low in fat. I like to try to eat healthy when I can and vegetarian meals often fit in perfectly with my goals. Because we aren’t strict vegetarians, we don’t have a lot of the ingredients that many vegetarian recipes call for. When I look for a vegan cookbook, I like to be able to make the dishes without buying a bunch of ingredients that we don’t normally use.

The Jazzy Vegetarian is lively vegan cuisine that’s easy and delicious.   This vegan cookbook begins with a foreword that explains why dietary change is important to improve your health.  A whole food, plant based diet can help people eat healthier. Laura Theodore is the host of a public television show titled the Jazzy Vegetarian as well as the author of this cookbook.   She explains how she went from being a jazz singer to promoting vegan food.  She also explains the basics of the vegan diet including a handy glossary of ingredients. She encourages organic eating to prevent the toxic burden that non-organic growing methods can expose us to. The book has a section on herbs, an equivalents chart, and a chapter on planning tempting meals along with ready made menu plans.

The recipes are broken down into Bountiful Breakfasts & Smoothies, Scrumptious Muffins & Quick Breads, Appetizing Starters & Snacks, Satisfying Soups & Sandwiches, Sassy Salads, Perfect Pasta, Marvelous Main Dishes, and Decadent Desserts & Beverages. The recipes include a brief introduction, detailed ingredients list that  and easy to follow directions.  Many of the recipes include foods you should commonly have around the house.  While some do call for things like non-dairy milk or tofu, most of  them have ingredients that will be familiar to anyone – vegetarian or not. There are tried and true favorites your family may already enjoy like Quick Lasagna Rolls and some new tastes to introduce them to like Roasted Asparagus with Garlic and Tomatoes.

If you’d like to introduce your family to a few vegan meals while still serving them foods that they enjoy, the Jazzy Vegetarianvegan cookbook is a great introduction. We tried the Awesome Oatmeal and it was delicious!
